Why does Disneyland stagger the waiting queues at Indiana Jones and Space Mountain?

I noticed we do not wait in the corridors of Space Mountain and most of the temple at Indiana Jones. When was this practice started? Does this staggering of lines help with the flow or some kind of health concerns?

I think it's a safety issue concerning maximum occupancy rates and the ability for guests to leave in the event of an emergency. They been doing it for at least 3 years now. The que was part of the experience of the ride and something to look at while waiting. Now it kinds of blows because by the time you get to that part of the que you end up just walking through it and not getting to pay much attention to it. Used to be able to get the decoder cards so you decipher the symbols on the walls when waiting for Indy. Now they rush you through that area and they don't even hand out the cards anymore. Same with Space Mountain. They stop everyone at the top before you enter the long hallway. By the time they let you in you walk all the way down till your inside where people are getting ready to launch. They used to have a couple windows in that hallway and you could actually see the ride in the dark before 15 years ago. They took it out when they did the major renovation and completely redid the entire que, also eliminating the escalator that was at the entrance to the que.
