Visiting the Chocolate Factories of Switzerland
When I was a young child my parents took me to Hershey, Pennsylvania for a tour of the chocolate factory. I remember my brother and sisters getting eating so much chocolate we got sick. Also I liked that all the street lights were shaped like rose buds.
Now it was time for a more serious chocolate vacation and my friends and I choose Switzerland (sorry Belgium). Swiss chocolate has a great reputation with high levels of cocoa butter, smooth and creamy.
We had been doing some cycling along Lake Geneva and saw the world head office for Nestle in Vevey so we knew we were getting close. We stayed in Montreux, a little farther along the coast, from where the Swiss Chocolate Train departs with its vintage cars up the mountain.
Arriving in the medieval Gruyeres we stopped in the cheese factory right by the train station before a short uphill walk into this walled town. Quaint shops surrounded the cobblestone main street as we headed to Gruyere castle for a tour.
But there was still the issue of chocolate and buses took us down partway down into the valley for the factory visit and chocolate sampling at the Nestle factory in Broc. We can also visit this factory built in 1898 on your own weekdays in the summer.
As we were spending a few days in Montreux and needed our chocolate fix we headed to check out the grocery store. Yes, they do sell great chocolate bars inexpensively (for Switzerland) if you buy ten. We did and they were great lunchtime snacks during our walks.
It was on to Zurich by train from where we walked to our hotel nearby. This is a walking town and it didn't talk long to discover the huge Sprungli chocolate shop on Bahnhofstrasse neary the train station (one of the main shopping streets). The displays in the windows were inviting and this 175 year old shop offered a huge variety of chocolates. Here you can buy not only fine chocolates, but you can sit with some delicious pastries, as well. In the meantime you can watch the people strolling by.
You can take the train but we took a boat from the Zurich waterfront to Kilchberg, home of the Lindt & Sprungli factory, although a tour is currently not available. There is a chocolate shop and frankly the journey just to get here is an amazing experience.
