What happened to Bill Cosby -- when did he become a serious, political commentator?

I'm watching Larry King and I was shocked to see Bill Cosby on the show. He's very serious, wearing pitch black sunglasses challenging Larry King and talking about Obama and Hillary being treated like anomalies*. He just co-authored a politcal book about America needing to wake up.

He has always been an activist. He usually speaks out about blacks, and "special treatment" under the guise of affirmative action, which he advocates is not special, it hinders the African Americans chances to excel by labeling them as needing special treatment.
